Phakopsora pachyrhizi, the causal agent of Asian soybean rust, is known to infect more than 90 leguminous species. They may provide living tissue to the obligate parasite in the season when soybean plants are not available. Species on which P. pachyrhizi rarely produced urediniospores may not be good overwintering hosts. Twenty five leguminous species were examined for lesion, uredinia and urediniospore production vy P. pachyrhizi. The plants were selected from common crops, forage crops, green manures and weeds around soybean fields in Brazil. Potted plants were first grown in arust-free greenhouse for three to four weeks and then moved to the greenhouse with soybean plants infected with rust. No further inoculations were done. Production of lesions, uredinia and urediniospores were evaluated from twnty six to sixty five after transfer. The plants were left further to check the appearance of signs of the pathogen. The most lesions with urediniospores were observed on Glycine max, followed by Phaseolus vulgaris and Neonotonia wightii. Many urediniospores were produced on some plants but not all of Pueraria lobata. Many lesions and a few urediniospores were produced on Cajanus cajan, Calopogonium mucunoides, Desmodium tortuosum, Lablab purpureus, Macroptilium atropurpureum, Pisum sativum, Pueraria phaseoloides. Few lesions and almost no urediniospores were produced on Centrosema sp., Crotalaria juncea, Vigna angularis and V. unguiculata. No lesions were observed on Arachis pintoi, Crotalaria spectabilis, Desmodium ovalifolium, Mucuna sp., Lotus corniculatus, Medicago sp., Senna obtusifolia, Stylosanthes guianensis, Trifolium pratense and T. vesiculosum.
